01 The Origin of Billiards and Snooker
The origin of billiards
Billiards, also known as table tennis or billiards, originated in Europe and later spread to the United States and China. This Western sport is now widely popularized in our country. At first, there were only two balls placed on the billiard table. But in 1775, the French added red balls, which was widely adopted by Britain. Subsequently, a pattern of three balls was formed on the table. This change was quickly followed by the British, and thus promoted the development of billiards. In Britain, the first billiards table was established in London in December 1836, and billiards gradually developed and became popular.
The Origin of Snooker
Snooker originated in the late 19th century, and its name comes from the English word for "obstacle", hence it is also known as obstacle billiards. In 1927, the first World Professional Snooker Championship was held in London, marking the official rise of this sport. Although snooker experienced a period of decline in the 1950s and 1960s, it became popular after television broadcasts and the introduction of a professional player ranking system in 1977 further propelled the development of this sport.
02 Differences in Game Rules
Types and gameplay of billiards
Billiards are different from snooker in terms of types, with relatively fewer balls. Among them, the types of billiards include eight ball and nine ball. Eight ball has 15 balls, while nine ball correspondingly reduces the number of balls. These two types of billiards have their own unique rules and charm, which increase the fun of the game and attract many enthusiasts.
The rules of snooker
Snooker uses 21 target balls, alternating between red and colored balls until all red balls are in the bag. In this billiards game, the rules are complex, diverse, and more challenging. This gameplay that combines red and colored balls is loved by many professional and amateur players due to its unique rules and challenges.
Differences in scores in the 03 competition
Scoring Rules for Billiards
Billiards scoring is achieved by hitting the ball into the pocket, for example, a red ball in the pocket earns 3 points, while a cue ball in the pocket deducts 3 points. The competition is usually won by the player who reaches the predetermined score first, which adds strategy and fun to the game.
Snooker score and penalty points
In snooker matches, red balls are worth 1 point, while colored balls range in value from 2 to 7 points. Penalty points are added to the opponent's score. If a foul is committed during a red ball, 4 points will be deducted and the opponent will be given an additional 4 points. If the score of the ball touched during a foul is less than 4 points, the penalty score will still be 4 points; If it is higher than 4 points, penalty points will be awarded according to the corresponding score of the colored ball.
04 Technical and tactical applications
◉ Technical means of billiards
Billiards is not only an indoor sport, but also integrates various techniques and strategies. It combines six different technical means, including straight long pole, diagonal long pole, short pole, mid pole, standing pole, and push rod, demonstrating the combination of movement, skill, and strategy.
The format of snooker matches
Snooker matches can be participated by two or more people, and the format of the game is flexible. The players use white balls to strike the red and colored balls alternately, causing them to fall into the bag. If there is a foul, a penalty will be imposed, and these points will be recorded in the opponent's score record. In the end, the player who wins the most rounds of the game is the winner.
